ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — State dollars from Albany are headed to the Southern Tier to help reduce gun violence.

State Sen. Lea Webb says $1.2 million through the Gun Involved Violence Elimination (G.I.V.E.) program is being split between Tompkins and Broome counties. The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office is getting $220,650, the Ithaca Police Department will receive $150,485, and the Tompkins County Probation Department gets $50,820.

The remaining money heads to law enforcement agencies in Broome County:

  • $360,753 for the Binghamton City Police Department
  • $202,511 for the Broome County Sheriff’s Office
  • $157,738 for the Broome County District Attorney
  • $103,400 for the Broome County Probation Department

According to Webb’s office, municipalities receiving G.I.V.E. grant funding saw gun violence reduced by 52% from 2021-24. Tompkins County Sheriff Derek Osborne calls the funding ‘critical’ to advancing public safety.
