ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — A new mural that celebrates immigrants might be coming to Ithaca.

The painting would be on West State Street, near the Southern Tier AIDS Program and Tompkins County Human Services Building. The project has not yet received approval from Tompkins County legislators.

Ithaca Welcomes Refugees, a nonprofit group serving refugees and immigrants, would manage the project. Funding from the Tompkins County Tourism Board and Community Arts Partnership would support the mural’s creation.

According to county documents, the mural would feature residents welcoming refugees to the community. It would also feature monarch butterflies that symbolize migration and the beauty of life.

The mural would be painted by Ithaca-based artist Hugo Medina.
