ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration is upcoming at the Greater Ithaca Activities Center (GIAC).

Officials say there will be a ‘very special surprise keynote speaker,’ along with a light breakfast, educational workshops, special performances, and a luncheon. This year’s theme centers around the country’s immigration system, represented by the Martin Luther King Jr. quote “anyone who lives in the United States can never be considered an outsider,” which he wrote in his 1963 Letter from a Birmingham Jail.

Educational workshops will include:

  • Wellness by Design: Claiming Space for Black Health – Herb Alexander, Assistant Vice President of People & Culture, Chief Diversity Officer, Cayuga Health Systems
  • Words Have Power: Demystifying the Myth of Race-Neutrality – Charlene Holmes, Tompkins County Chief Equity and Diversity Officer
  • Immigration Concerns – TBD

Registration is preferred for the event, which happens from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on January 18 at GIAC.
