ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – A senior at Cornell University has won a national award.

Midshipman Kylie Williamson has been named Student of the Year for the Navy Federal Credit Union ROTC All-American Scholarship Program.

Williamson was one of three chosen out of 15 finalists across the country, one each for the Army, Navy/Marine, and Air Force. A physics major, Williamson led the CU Invitational Drill Competition, coordinating the event, which hosted 14 visiting ROTC and service academy teams. In her free time, she volunteers at a local food bank, supports Down Syndrome Connection events, mentors middle school STEM students, and coaches youth swimming in the summer.

In addition to a $6500 scholarship and a $5,000 donation to Cornell’s Booster Club or Student Fund, Williamson will receive a VIP experience at the NCAA Football Go Bowling Military Bowl later this month.

“Our battalion overall is pretty small,” Williamson said. “Up until this year, we only had 25 midshipmen, whereas other universities may have upwards of 150 midshipmen. It’s a small, tight-knit community compared to other programs across the country.”

The game will be televised nationally on ESPN, and Williamson will be featured during the broadcast.

The Pitt Panthers will battle the East Carolina Pirates on Saturday, December 27, at 11 a.m.
