ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Several groups and businesses are partnering to help local families.

On August 31, with the help of a $16,000 gift from the Lane Family Fund, the Community Foundation of Tompkins County and GIAC are offering a Back-to-School Supplies Drive in Ithaca.

This year’s drive is prioritizing students in rural areas of the county.

“This is about more than notebooks and backpacks – it’s about dignity, confidence, and helping children feel prepared to succeed,” said Community Foundation Chief Engagement, Equity, & Grants Officer Gloria Coicou. “As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we are proud to show our deep commitment to our community.”

Several area businesses and organizations are getting involved, including Staples, T.J. Maxx, Old Navy, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and the Family Reading Partnership.

Attendees will receive a new backpack of their choice, up to $80 in school supplies from Staples, gently used books, and access to basic essentials like socks and underwear.

“Our community is strongest when we invest in our children,” said Community Foundation CEO George Ferrari. “By working together with our partners, we are not just providing supplies – we are showing kids that they matter, that they belong, and their community believes in their future.”

The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sunday at Staples, which is keeping the store open after its normal hours of business to accommodate youngsters and parents.

This year’s song of the summer is a ballad, not a banger. Here’s what that says about us
