CORTLAND, N.Y. (WHCU) — In 2020, crime in Cortland County went up.

The Cortland Standard reports numbers released by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services show a 17-percent increase in crime last year countywide. Violent crime doubled between 2016 and 2020, rising from 43 to 97 cases. Aggravated assaults also rose, 33 last year over 22 in 2019.

The FBI cites increasing crime coast to coast, but they say that could be because more police agencies are now reporting numbers – over 900 more police departments reported data last year than in 2019.
