CORTLAND, N.Y. (WHCU) – The search for the next leader of Cortland County’s economic development organizations has come to an end.

Brendan O’Bryan will be the next executive director and CEO of the Business Development Corporation (BDC) and Industrial Development Agency (IDA) after a national search featuring 22 applicants. O’Bryan comes from nearby Broome County, where he was the top official in the leading economic development group ‘The Agency,’ helping to secure two Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant awards during his tenure in Endicott and Johnson City.

“We are excited about this transition and are thrilled to have someone of Brendan’s caliber join our organization as executive director and CEO,” said BDC/IDA board chairman Mike McMahon. “Brendan will hit the ground running. He knows the working mechanics of the county-focused economic development industry, the various players in the field, and the collaborative relationship-building that is critical for success.”

O’Bryan will succeed Garry VanGorder, who is retiring after 14 years of service. Board chairman Mike McMahon credited VanGorder for his help in the transition process and all the work he’s done in his capacity since joining the BDC/IDA in 2009.

“I wish to convey my thanks to Garry for his steadfast service to our boards and to the community, as well as for collaborating with us on a well-defined and organized succession strategy, assuring a seamless shift in this vitally significant role.”
